Deciding Between: Linen Cotton vs Linen Rayon

Deciding Between: Linen Cotton vs Linen Rayon

I know it can be a little confusing that we often sell prints on multiple substrates - I hear you! We do this to meet our printer's minimum order quantities and also believe a little variety is the spice of life. Our favorite bases are Organic Cotton, Linen Cotton and Linen Rayon.

But let's chat about Linen Cotton vs Linen Rayon as these cause the most confusion :)

I dug up some past makes of mine in the same pattern to help visually clarify the difference. These are the Tapioca Trouser Shorts by Jessilous Closet, made in the same size both times but as you can tell, they hang differently!

The Linen Rayon on the left has more drape and skims down the body. I love this fabric for dresses and jumpsuits.

The Linen Cotton on the right has more structure, sticks out from the body at the hem, and holds pleats and gathers beautifully. I love this fabric for button down shirts especially and skirts that hold their shape.

Both are blended with linen so you will have that delicious rumpled linen feel and texture, either way but a very different drape. Both work well for shorts and casual pants.

Are they easy to sew with?

YES! Both are relatively easy. I'd say the Linen Cotton is easiest if you are a beginner - it has more structure so it's less shifty.

The Linen Rayon can shift around more so I just use more pins when I work with it but I don't find it challenging and I definitely struggle with PURE rayon or silk.

Artist Kristy Kay loves how the Linen Rayon is super soft, midweight, and has a stunning drape so she used it for her matching set. Featuring Homestead in Pink Lemonade in the Henrietta Skirt by Spaghetti Western Sewing

Bethany used the Linen Cotton for a puff sleeved dress - notice how the Linen Cotton holds the gathered poofy sleeve in place? Use Linen Cotton for dramatic volume or for classic button down shirts. This was a past print run of Butter in Blue in the Matilde Dress by Lizzie Design Studio.

Let me know what your other questions are!
