Swatch Color Studies: Warm Sunlight vs Cool Shade

Swatch Color Studies: Warm Sunlight vs Cool Shade

So I know color is one of the hardest things about purchasing fabric online - trust me - we have all been there when fabrics arrive in the mail and it's a little different than we had imagined. It's truly so hard for us fabric store owners because every computer and device renders color a little bit different. Seriously, its a headache and an adventure all at the same time.

I try to get around this by offering a written description of every fabric color on the website (found under product description) where I will describe the qualities of the color - is it warm? is it deep? is it cool? etc. I also recommend checking our IG to see example sews, we catalog community makes in our story highlights so you can get a better sense of each fabric. We also recommend ordering a swatch first to eliminate any color concerns.

But at any rate, I thought it would be helpful to show some fabric swatches together and how much they change in bright warm sunlight vs cool indirect light (in the shade) so you can get a better idea of which color you might prefer. If you want to see any other pairings, please let us know in the comments or drop us a line at hello @ fluidplusdrape . com

I particularly love how the cool colors like cobalt become more electric in the shade and the warmer colors like hot red become electric in the sunlight. You will probably wear your garment in both the sun and shade so it's handy to know how the color changes.

Let us know what we missed! I tried to photograph the more recent releases that had a good amount of stock hoping that these wouldn't sell out after I posted these photos. Next time I need to round up the yellows, pinks, oranges and maybe a mix of prints, ginghams and solids? Let us know what we missed :)
